Hornaday Takes Close One in Atlanta

Postby acegear » Sun Mar 20, 2005 6:19 pm

Former Craftsman Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday was able to barely able to hold on to his truck to edge out Bobby Labonte for his first win since 2002.

Hornaday had been pulling away from the field until pole sitter Rick Crawford lost control and hit the wall with two laps to go. With the field back together for a green-white-checkered finish, Hornaday had the lead but Labonte got a good start, passing 2nd place Bobby Hamilton and setting his sites on Hornaday.

Labonte was able to get by Hornaday on the outside in the final lap. However, Hornaday fought back in turn 3, sparks flying as he brushed the wall and retaking the lead. Labonte tried to hold on and make another run in the tri-oval, briefly making contact with Hornaday as they approached the checkered flag. Hornaday's truck got loose and began to slide sideways, but he regained control just enough to take the checkered by one foot or 0.008 seconds.

This is the closest truck race ever on a superspeedway. The only closer finishes have come on the short tracks of Colorado and Richmond.
