Tony Stewart was able to climb the fence for his first win of the 2006 season as he held off the Hendrick clan to take the checkered in the Nextel Cup DirecTV 500 at Martinsville Speedway. After battling all day from the front and in the pack, at the end it came down to who kept enough for the end.
Towards the end of the race, Jimmie Johnson had the lead with 31 laps to go, followed by Stewart and Jeff Gordon. For the next 4 laps Stwart conducted a clinic on how to use the bump-an-run to wear out your opponent without spinning him out. With 27 laps to go, Stewart finally made it by Johnson followed by Gordon who looked like he might be able to fight for the win. However, the short track gods were not looking favorably on Gordon. A couple late race cautions in addition to a red flag with 9 laps to go ensured that Stewart would maintain his position, pulling away for the win at the end.
Contender Kasey Kahne looked be a force to be accounted with as he maintained a top-6 position as the race developed but engine problems on lap 281 cropped up when Kahne reported a dropped cylinder. From there the #9 lost positions, eventually being lapped by Tony Stewart. With performance declining by the lap the team decided to bring the car to the hauler. Kahne's car wasn't the only Evernham car to experience engine problems as Jeremy Mayfield suffered from apparently the same failure as Kahne. The only bright spot in the Evernham fold was Scott Riggs posting a top-10 finish to guarantee him a starting spot for Texas.
