Defending Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart led the 1st practice session for the Nextel Cup DirecTV 500 at Martinsville Speedway with a 19.670 at 96.268 mph. Teh points leader, Jimmie Johnson was 4th fastest with last weeks winner Kurt "bump-and-run" Busch 10th fastest.
