The American Speed Association or ASA was started in 1968 primarily promoting sprint car races. However, by 1975 the ASA only ran stock cars. Over the years, ASA has become the premier short track touring car series in the US. NASCAR stars Darrell Waltrip, Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Johnny Benson, Jr., Ted Musgrave, and the late Alan Kulwicki, and Adam Petty are all products of the ASA National Series.
ASA has introduced several innovative developments that makes for an exciting race. All cars run late-model fiberglass bodies with V-6 engines, and mufflers. ASA also pioneered a practice that NASCAR just recently adopted. All races are finished under a grean flag. If a crach happens with 3 laps to go, scoring is frozen until the track is clear then the race is restarted with 3 laps to go. ASA also allows a "competition yellow" flag to be shown when half of the race has been completed, allowing all teams to have a free pit stop without putting any team a lap down. All these features have combined to make ASA a very exciting series to watch and race in.
During the 1990's ASA recieved a big boost through broadcasting on TNN. All 2004 races have been televised on Speed TV. Come take a look at an "alternative" stock car series. You won't be disappointed.
