2005 USAC Midget Copper World Classic

Postby acegear » Sat Feb 05, 2005 4:59 am

The 2005 Copper World Classic was held this year at Phoenix International Raceway in Phoenix, AZ. Featuring several events over the course of the weekend, the midgets were the first USAC cars to take center stage. Faced with unpredictable weather during qualifying that featured pouring rain and hail, the midgets were only able to have a short amount of time to get things done. However, the weather cooperated enough to establish a starting grid which included 32 cars.

Midget Feature Field: Michael Lewis/Bobby East, Tracy Hines/J.J. Yeley, Thomas Meseraull/Jay Drake, Dave Steele/Ron Gregory, Tom Hessert III/Aaron Fike, Josh Wise/Brad Kuhn, Dallen McKenney/Tony Hunt, Mario Marietta/Richey Jacobs, Teddy Beach/Bobby Grewohl, Cole Carter/Bobby Santos, Steve Paden/Todd Beach, Aaron Pierce/Ryan Durst, Travis Miniea/Robby Flock, Danny Ebberts/Stephen Graves, Davey Ray/David Thompson, Stuart Birkinbine/Doug Cross.

Having a better time with the weather once race time arrived, the field was given the green flag to put the hammer down for 25 laps. At the start pole-sitter Lewis couldn't hold his position and gave way to East, however the first yellow of the evening would be shown for Marietta. Marrieta was moved from 15th to the back of the field. Due to the first lap yellow the start was redone with the original line-up. This time when the green was dropped Lewis held his position leaving East in second for the first lap.

Pulling out to a five length lead, Lewis still leads with East, Yeley, Hines, and Meseraull round out the top five. Ebberts brings out the yellow on lap three with a skidding stop near the start/finish line. The green drops and Lewis pulls away with East in tow. Meseraull takes a look to the inside of Hines for fourth place but instead loses fifth to Drake. Carter moves up to ninth trading places with Gregory a couple of times.

By lap ten the top-15 looks like this: Lewis, East, Yeley, Hines, Drake, Steele, Fike, Meseraull, Carter, Gregory, Hessert, Kuhn, Santos, Wise, and Hunt. The leaders start to catch the tail of the field and yellow comes out again. Green comes out again just in time for Santos to hit the outside wall in turn one very hard. His car bounces off the wall, crosses the track, and into the infield on turn two. Santos climbs from the car unscathed. Grewohl and Marietta are collected on along the way and are out of action.

The first attempt at a green is waived off, but the next is a clean start. The top 10 has stayed the same through 15 laps when the yellow is brought out yet again for Leader is brought in for a sway bar hanging out the left side of his car. Race leader, Lewis, has gone out with undetermined mechanical problems. Yeley is the new leader at the green, however East passes Yeley to take over the front position followed by Yeley, Drake, and Steele.

The lead group of East, Yeley, and Drake pull away from the field at lap 20. They are followed by Steele, Hines, and Pike further back. Lewis is back in the race and has passed the back 10 cars on his way forward unfortunately his is still a lap down. Yeley and Drake use traffic to move around East.

At the checkered flag it is Yeley, Drake, and East with Steele, Hines, Fike, Hessert, Wise, Gregory, and McKinney rounding out the top 10.
