Ending the Andretti "curse" as an owner, Andretti-Green Racing driver Dan Wheldon passed sensational rookie Danica Patrick for the lead with 6 laps to go to take the checkered flag in the 89th running of the Indianapolis 500. While most of the focus was on the younger Patrick, Wheldon proved him and his team are a force to be reckoned with by winning the most important race of the season and the 4th out of 5 races so far this season.
This is the first time an Andretti has been in winner circle at Indy since the 1969 event was won by team co-owner Mario Andretti. Since that time Mario has been fighting to get back.
The talk of the race was of course the young Danica Patrick who brought the estimated 350,000 spectators to their feet when she took over the lead for the second time late in the race. However, with her fuel running out, Patrick was only able to hold on for 4th overall which is the highest finish by a female in the Great American Race. The previous best by a female driver was Janet Guthrie who placed 9th in 1978.
The top-5 finish was quite an accomplishment for a rookie driver notwithstanding her gender, and considering an pit row incident in which she stalled the car coming out of the pit box, and was involved in a close call mid-race that damaged the nose of her car. After repairs were completed by her crew she was able to continue her climb towards the top.
Rahal-Letterman teammate to Patrick, Vitor Meira held on for 2nd while Wheldon's Andretti-Green teammate Bryan Herta took 3rd. Then with Patrick in 4th, Buddy Lazier rounded out the top 5 for Panther Racing.
