Taking adavantage of the late stop, Hornish's team elected to forgo tires in exchange for getting back on the track a second sooner. Hornish made his way back on the track taking over the lead with a lapped Dan Wheldon between him and 2nd place Dario Franchitti. Getting a good jump on the green flag, Hornish was able to stay out front while Franchitti had to deal with Wheldon before making a run for the lead. As Franchitti began to set his sights on Hornish, Tomas Scheckter brushed the wall with 8 laps to go bringing out the yellow until 2 laps to go. Hornish got another good jump and forced Franchitti up high where he lost control and clipped the wall allowing Hornish to take the checkered flag.
