Kyle Busch became the youngest driver to ever win a Nextel Cup race when he took the checkered flag in the Nextel Cup Sony HD 500 at California Speedway. The 20 year old driver and brother of reigning Nextel Cup champion Kurt Busch celebrated his first career Nextel Cup victory overshadowed by the Race for the Chase that was occupying the minds of all the drivers within reach.

Roush Racing's Carl Edwards started in the pole sharing the front row with teammate Mark Martin. Following, were two more Roush Racing teammates, Kurt Busch and Greg Biffle. Once the race started, the Roush drivers exchanged the lead at least once to take advantage of the 5 bonus points for leading a lap. The driving became treacherous with the sun setting in the California sky.

Once the sun went down however, the drivers settled into their pace. Kyle Busch worked his way to the front and took the lead from his brother Kurt on lap 83. It wasn't meant to last as Tony Stewart made his move towards the front. But Kyle would be back, retaking the lead on lap 152. Stewart and Kyle would play this back and forth until Kyle takes the lead for the final time on lap 210.

With a late race caution on lap 241 the field comes to the pits with Kyle, Biffle and Brian Vickers taking only two tires. When the green drops, Kyle rockets back to the front with Biffle hot on his heels until yet another yellow flag on lap 247 which sets the race up for a green-white-checkered finish. Even with only two fresh tires, Kyle holds off Biffle and Vickers to take the green flag.
