Defending Nextel Cup champion, Kurt Busch, led 131 laps of the 200 laps in the Nextel Cup Pennsylvania 500 on his way to his first career win at Pocono Raceway. Busch was able to pass eventual 2nd place finisher Rusty Wallace with 17 laps to go and with the benefit of clean air pulled away from the field to take the checkered flag.
Roush Racing was the team of the day, who in addition to winning the race with Kurt Busch, posted a 3rd place Mark Martin and a 4th place Carl Edwards who started at the back of the field. Rounding out the top-5 would be the #12 Alltel Dodge driven by Ryan Newman. However, Busch had the strongest car of the day out of the blocks, taking the lead from pole-sitter Jamie McMurray on the first lap. Busch would go on to lead 110 of the first 150 laps, before taking the lead for good with 17 to go.
Debris and tires were the pitfalls of the day as multiple cautions were called for no apparent reason until closer inspection. In fact the track had to be repair in the "tunnel turn" for damage that occured in the previous ARCA race.
The next Nextel Cup race will be the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at the Indianapolis International Speedway. Race coverage will begin on August 7, 2005 at 2:30pm EST on NBC.
