Ryan Newman led the field in the 1st practice session for the Nextel Cup Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway with the fast lap of 54.007 sec at 166.645 mph. Series leader Jimmie Johnson did not have a very good session as he was all the way down in 23rd.
