Rookie Carl Edwards tempered the disappointment he felt for missing the rain-delayed Busch Series race Sunday by winning the Nextel Cup Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway. Starting from a race-record 29th place to give owner Jack Roush his first victory on the unique triangular raceway, Edwards did most of his practicing on a video game. And apparently it worked out.
Edwards had been in Nashville to run the Busch Series race, but due to the rain delay had to fly back with car owner Roush in the early morning hours of Sunday. Roush Racing previously had 11 2nd place finishes at this race track coming into this weekends race.
The theme of the day was dealing with cut down tires. Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr, in addition to many others, suffered from numerous left front tire failures which put each several laps down at the end.
Edwards main rival of the day was Brian Vickers who gained the lead 6 times for a race high 121 laps, but was only able to hold on for 2nd. Edwards was able to take back the front position on lap 187 of 200, and never look back. Rounding out the top-5 was Joe Nemechek, Kyle Busch, and pole sitter Michael Waltrip.
The next race in the Nextel Cup Series is the Batman Begins 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, MI with race coverage begining June 19, 2005 at 1:30pm EST on FOX.
