Starting from the 2nd postition, Greg Biffle held on through 7 cautions and some exciting racing to take the checkered flag for the Nextel Cup MBNA RacePoints 400 at Dover International Speedway in Dover, DE. His 4th win of the season moves Biffle within 46 points of leader Jimmie Johnson.
The race started quietly enough with Jimmie Johnson leading the field to the green flag. Due to rain, qualifying was cancelled, so points leader Jimmie Johnson was placed on the pole. Elliot Sadler was able to get by Greg Biffle early on for 2nd place.
The first caution of the race comes out for debris on the track on lap 12. Most of the leaders come in for tires. Robbie Gordon did not pit and leads the race after starting 43rd. Elliot Sadler was able to get out of the pits first, and now takes the lead from Robbie Gordon on lap 23. Green flag racing would last until lap 34, when the yellow comes out agian for debris on the track. The leaders are back on pit road to take tires and fuel. Sadler leads them back onto the track and to the green flag on lap 40.
It wasn't to last though as Tony Stewart gets under Jeff Gordon sending Gordon sliding into the wall on turn 2 and collecting Ricky Rudd in the process. This brings out the 3rd caution of the race, and Jeff Gordon is hot. Watch out Tony Stewart in the next race!
Bobby Labonte's day is done early on lap 52 as he blows an engine. Further inspection finds a belt on the track that is from Labonte's car, so it appears maybe a belt wasn't tightened enough before the race started. Not a good turn of events for the 2nd place finisher from the last race and 1999 series champion.
Kyle Busch leads the pack as they finish lap 60. But Elliot Sadler is back on his way up front and takes over the lead on lap 88. This ends Kyle Busch's run up front at 48 laps. The green flag run continues until lap 118 when the yellow comes out again for debris on the track. This is the 3rd for debris. Seems to be a recurring problem for NASCAR.
The leaders come to pit road to refresh their tires and fuel. Green flag racing continues with Sadler in the lead followed by series points leader Jimmie Johnson, and Kyle Busch.
Dave Blaney has serious problems on lap 136 coming out of turn 2. He spins into the inside wall, and ricochets up the track right into the left side of Ken Schraders car. Caution is out as both cars are destroyed. Both drivers appear to be shaken up but are ok.
Kyle Busch elects to only take right-side tires to pass Sadler for the lead. By lap 170 there are only 24 cars on the lead lap and the number goes down every couple of laps. Rusty Wallace have moved into 3rd place by lap 180. He has been running about 2 mph faster than the leader, Kyle Busch. However, Elliot Sadler is able to get back around Kyle Busch for the lead at the halfway point.
More debris on the track, and the leaders come in for the 6th caution of the race. Elliot Sadler is able to hold his position on the pit stop with Matt Kenseth making the biggest move up by 6 places to 5th. By lap 225 Greg Biffle has moved into 4th and is making a move towards the front. Biffle is able to make it past Sadler on lap 241 for the lead. Coming from the NW and SW NASCAR Elite series, Biffle is most comfortable on the short tracks.
Kasey Kahne brings out the 7th caution of the day as he slams into the wall coming out of turn 4. The 2004 Rookie of the Year has shown signs of coming out of his sophmore slump with his first Nextel Cup win this season, but the last two races have especially hard on the Evernham driver. The leaders are on pit road with most taking 4 tires and a full tank of gas.
Lap 300 sees Biffle still the in the lead followed by Sadler and Mark Martin. With 100 laps to go, the field will need at least one more stop to get to the finish. There are only 16 cars on the lead lap, with 18 cars at least one lap down, and 9 cars out of the race. By lap 364 the number of lead lap cars is down to 13 as Biffle passes Michael Waltrip to put him a lap down. We are still under green and green flag pit stops should be starting soon, but question is who will be the first to go.
Brian Vickers answers that question on lap 374 by pitting first and only taking 2 right-side tires. Biffle follows his lead on the next lap but takes 4 tires and enough fuel to make it to the end. He is soon followed by Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson.
With 10 laps to go, Greg Biffle still leads the pack followed by Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin, and Rusty Wallace. There are only 11 cars on the lead lap.
Biffle is able to hold off the rest of the field thanks to the 4 tires he got on the last pit stop. The top-5 stayed the same with Kyle Busch in 2nd, Johnson in 3rd, Martin 4th, and Rusty Wallace taking 5th.
The next Nextel Cup race is the Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, PA on Sunday June 12, 2005 with qualifying to start at 5:00pm EST on the 11th, and racing to begin at 1:00pm EST on Sunday.
