In an all too familiar sight, Ryan Newman leads the field to the green flag to start the 2005 Nextel All-Star Challenge. This 90 lap race will be run in 3 sessions; 40 laps, 30 laps and 20 green flag laps, with each session separated by a caution period.

By lap 15 the leaders have come for a green falg stop with race leader Ryan Newman losing several positions. Elliot Sadler takes over the lead with Rusty Walace in 2nd. By lap 30, Mark martin takes over 2nd place, but Sadler has a 2 second lead over the rest of the field. When a caution comes out on lap 30 for debris on the track, Rusty is the highest placed car to pit.

On the restart Martin gets a run on Sadler and takes the lead just as a 10 car wreck happens behind them caused by Joe Nemachek and Kevin Harvick getting together. Terry Labonte, Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne are among those involved. The red flag is out to clear the track with Mark Martin still in the lead. Despite the red flag, teams are allowed to work on their damaged cars during the red flag in the Challenge. It doesn't look good for Kasey Kahne as they push his car back to the garage with quite a bit of damage.

The green flag comes back out again on lap 37 with Mark Martin still in the lead. Since he still led at the end of the first segment Martin takes home $75,000. Next is the caution period before the next 30 lap session. A further twist in introduced with some of the leading cars being inverted in position. Based on a lottery-type system it is decided that 6 cars will invert, meaning Brian Vickers who ended the 1st session in 6th will now lead the race and Mark Martin will move back to 6th.

So Vickers leads the field to the green to begin the 2nd session. I'm sure it crosses a few minds that it should be Mike Bliss in that position in stead of Vickers, but it was not to be. Vickers lead would be short lived as Ryan Newman has worked his way back to the front. Elliot Sadler makes a run for 2nd on lap 60 to relegate Vickers back to 3rd, but Newman has built quite a lead. A rather uneventful 2nd session ends with Newman still in the lead and the final mandatory caution before the last session of 20 green flag laps.

All the cars come to pit row and Elliot Sadler takes the lead with only 2 tires, followed by Jeff Gordon who also only took 2. Mark Martin comes out 3rd and is the first car with 4 tires. Sadler leads the field to the line and the final session is under way. Ryan Newman brings out the first caution of the final session when he spins into the outer wall and collects teammate Rusty Wallace on the way. Caution laps don't count in the final session, so we will still have 18 green flag laps to run. Jeff Gordon takes advantage of the yellow to take 4 fresh tires.

Elliot Sadler leads them once again to the green, But Martin on those 4 tires takes the lead from Sadler followed by Jimmie Johnson who pushes Sadler back to 3rd. By lap 86 Martin has built almost a 1 second lead over 2nd place Sadler who is fighting tooth and nail to make a run for the lead. Mark Martin is just too strong though, and holds on for the win and the million dollar payoff for the winner. Sadler is 2nd followed by Open winner Vickers in 3rd, and Jeff Gordon in 4th.
