The Nextel Cup All-Star Challenge is the mid-season exposition of winning drivers from the current and previous season and also the series champions from seasons past. Various other competitionas are also held including the Nextel Pit Crew Challenge witch pit the crews from all the the qualified teams against each other with the fastest crew winning the prize.
In addition to the Challenge will be an Open race for all the drivers that have not qualified for the Challenge. Each race will have a unique format. The Open will start first, and as already stated will only include the drivers that have not qualified for the Challenge. After qualifying the grid will be lined up and the race started. The first 20 laps will be run then all the cars come in to pit and go back out for another 10 lap shoot-out. The winner of the Open qualifies for the Challenge along with another dirver that is voted for by the fans.
The Challenge will follow the same format as the Open only longer. Pit stopps will happen at 40 laps, 30 laps, and 20 laps with the winner taking home a $1 million purse.
Both races are exhibitions for pride and money only with no drivers or owners points at stake. However this weekend sets the stage for next weekends Coca-Cola 600 here at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC.
