A fairly tame race by most accounts, racing was 3 and 4 wide, with a couple of minor cautions going into lap 132. Going into turn 1, most of the field was bunched together in this tight racing that is a signature of the restricter-plate. Near the front of the pack, Dale Earnhardt Jr was behind Mike Skinner using the bump draft when Jimmie Johnson drifted up the track from the inside, turning Skinners nose and leaving the rest of the field nowhere to go. Virtually eliminating 1/2 of the 43 car field, once the dust settled, it appeared there was a junk yard in the turn 1 infield with all 25 wrecked cars parked there. A 43 minute red flag ensued to give NASCAR time to clear the track, clean up the mess, and fix the safer-barrier that had been damaged on the outside wall. Once the race restarted only 17 cars were on the lead lap, leaving the likes of Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin, Ryan Newman, Joe Nemechek, Mike Bliss, Bobby Hamilton Jr., Scott Wimmer, Carl Edwards, Mike Skinner, Brian Vickers and Kyle Busch to try to fix their cars enough to get out an turn a couple of more laps.
Jeff Gordon dominated the race by leading for 139 of the 194 laps. Despite the recent field clearing accident on lap 132, the rest of the lead lap cars continued business as usual with 3 wide racing and jockeying for position the norm. And as if the "big one" wasn't enough excitement for one race, the lead lap cars went to it again on lap 186 as Jimmie Johnson brushed the outside wall hitting Kevin Harvick, who then pushes Martin Truex Jr into Earnhardt Jr resulting a 6 car melee right before the end of the race. Johnson, Earnhardt Jr, Truex Jr, Greg Biffle, Harvick and Travis Kvapil all suffer damage and have to limp through the remaining laps to finish the race.
The green comes out for the green-white-checkered finish with Jeff Gordon leading closely followed by Tony Stewart and Michael Waltrip. Gordon is just too strong, and takes the checkered flag for his 4th restricter-plate win in the last 5 races. Jamie McMurray is the top Dodge in 4th with Jamie McMurray rounding out the top-5.
