In a stunning upset, Mexico City native Jorge Goeters bested the NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch Series regulars by winning the pole in the inagural Mexico 200. Thousands of Mexicans witnessed thier hometown driver push Robby Gordon out of first place with a run of 103.366 mph.
34-year-old Goeters is no stranger to winning. He has captured Mexican titles in trucks, Mustangs, sport prototypes, and tractor trucks. And after winning the Busch pole, Goeters didn't have much time to celebrate as he was also on the pole for the local Corona Challange race, which NASCAR hopes to turn into a developmental series.
In addition to Robbie Gordon, Martin Truex Jr, Boris Siad, and Ron Fellows rounded out the top-5.
The Mexico 200 is being held on a 2.786 mile road course at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City. This will be the first Busch series road course race since Watkins Glen in 2001. Originaly built for Formula 1, Autodromo recently hosted an event 2003 for the CART series where the attendance topped an amazing 402,000 people.
