NASCAR's realignment in 2003 resulted in a two-tier driver development system that combined the Busch North series with the West series which became the NASCAR Grand National Division. While this name was the original name of the Nextel Cup series in the early days of NASCAR, the revival of the Grand National Division represents a new direction in the development of new drivers.
In order to combine the two series, changes were made to the car speicifications for both series to develop a common template. GND cars run 350-358 cu in engines with a max compression ratio of 12:1 on a 105-110 in wheel base, and a minimum weight of 3,300 lbs.
The West Series will celebrate it's 52nd season with the 2005 schedule. The series competes in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. Graduates of the West Series include Kevin Harvick and Chad Little.
The Busch North Series was established in 1985 to primarily run on the east coast. Races are held in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. 2004 Busch series champion Martin Truex Jr is a product of the Busch North Series in addition to Ricky Craven.
