Up-and-comer Dave Connolly was able to defeat a star studded field to take the Pro Stock competition. Connolly turned a 6.711 at 204.98 mph to beat Pro Stock legend Warren Johnson who was close behind with a 6.802 ay 203.31 mph. This is the 22 year olds first taste of leading the overall standings.
Connolly, had to work his way through Jeg Coughlin, Allen Johnson, and Ron Krishner to meet Johnson in the final. When asked if he was intimidated meeting the 92-win granddaddy of Pro Stock, "I didn't really get nervous racing Warren,” Connolly said. “The guy has done a lot for the class and you have to respect his accomplishments. I don't know if I've ever even raced him before. Certainly to beat him in the finals is a huge deal for anyone."
