After a 10 year hiatus, the World of Outlaws sprint cars returned to the dirt banks of the Bakersfield Speedway. And the return was well worth the wait.
Joey Saldana was on the pole to start the 35-lap main event, followed by Brian Paulus with Craig Dollansky in third. Working his way through heavy traffic on the 1/3-mile track, Dollansky was able to get past Paulus to make a run on leader Saldana.
With Dollansky making a run on Paulus, Jason Meyers made a daring move in the third lap going 3 wide the top of turn 2 to pass Mark Kinser and Steve Kinser, drawing cheers from the home crowd. Meyers had worked his way as high as third place before being passed by Steve Kinser on the bottom of turn 3.
With speeds in excess of 110 mph, the lead pack caught the back of the field rather quickly. So Saldana was able to use the traffic to his advantage holding off Dollansky through several cautions and red flags for flips by Tim Kaeding in the 10th lap and Jason Sides on lap 14.
Another caution came out on lap 17, and on the restart the two leaders pulled away from the field and the fight for third. By lap 22, Dollansky was ready to make his move. Moving to the bottom of the track, Dollansky chipped away at Saldana's lead. It took two laps but he was able to finally slide past the leader in the exit from turn 4. Saldana tried to put up a fight but resigned himself to defending 2nd position from a hard charging Steve Kinser who was coming fast from third place. Rounding out the top-5 were race co-promoter Jason Meyers, and Kraig Kinser.
