The traditional season opener, Winternationals have been held at the Fairplex in Pomona, California for the last 44 seasons. If the 45th edition was any indication of how this season would go then we are in for one spectacular year.

Top Fuel started out with a bang, and posted the fasted starting lineup in Top Fuel history. No less than 7 drivers posted 4.40's. Race favorite Tony Schumacher posted 4.452 and 4.447 times on Saturday which are in the top five fastest of all time. His 334.65 mph top speed on the 4.452 run turned out to be the 2nd fasted top-fuel time in history.

Funny Car would be no less exciting with perenial favorite John Force lining up against former teammate Tony Pedregon in the final matchup of the session. Force was the low qualifier with a 4.697 on Thursday but Tony took the top qualifier position away with a 4.681 at over 323 mph. However, the excitement wasn't over yet as Tony's parachute didn't properly open and his car skidded into the sand trap at the end of the track. Unfortunately, the recent heavy rains had turned the sand into a messy quagmire of muck. Tony's car had to be carefully extracted from the mud, then needed extensive repiars before it would be ready to go for Sunday's elimination rounds.

Jim Yates posted an impressive comeback in the Pro-Stock division with a 6.699 and 205.16 mph to claim the top spot for the first time since Reading 2002. In the process of taking the #1 position, Jim bumped Mike Edwards who had previously held the pole with a 6.732 from Thursday. Two-time Pro-Stock champion Greg Anderson had a disappointing qualifying round with a 6.728 which was only good for 7th place.
