Jimmie Johnson had the lead spot in Duel #2 for qualifying in 2nd place during Sunday's time trials. Jimmie was able to hold onto the lead through the caution on lap 3 for an accident involving Kirk Shelmerdine, Derrick Cope, and Greg Sacks. It appears Cope escaped with minimal damage, although Shelmerdine and Sacks weren't so lucky.

Johnson still leads when the green drops, followed in a close second by Kevin Harvick and Rusty Wallace. He was able to hold them off until lap 13 when Harvick takes the lead, and Wallace moves to second. But by lap 23, Wallace had moved back making the top 5: Harvick, Johnson, Vickers, Labonte, and Stewart. The leaders begin to pit on lap 31 and are led in by Harvick. The lead swaps between several drivers as the pit cycle is completed. Labonte leads, then Wimmer, and finally by lap 33 the cycle is completed and Jimmie Johnson is back in the lead.

Just when everyone appears settled, a major melee ensues. Harvick bumps Johnson which causes an 8 car accident, taking out Harvick, Johnson, Rusty Wallace, Scott Riggs, Jeremy Mayfield, Mark Martin, Joe Nemechek, and Dave Blaney. By the time the track has cleared, the green comes back out and Jeff Burton takes the lead. However it is short lived as Tony Stewart takes over on lap 49. Tony is able to hold off the rest of the field to take the race and the fourth starting position for the 500.

Jeff Burton(31) goes three wide with John Andretti(14) and Bobby Labonte(18)
