In a crash filled race, Michael Waltrip passed DEI teammate and car owner Dale Earnhardt, Jr. to take the race. Waltrip was able to pull out the win after passing Earnhardt on the outside in the final turn and getting to the finish line .030 seconds before his teammate.
Dale Jarrett started in the lead position after winning the pole in Sunday's qualifying round. From the moment the green dropped they were racing three wide to gain positions. Jeff Gordon takes the lead from Jarrett on the second lap. Lap 5 sees a crash involving Carl Edwards and Randy Lajoie, causing Lajoie to spin out. In trying to avoid the accident Hermie Sadler and Morgan Shephard get together, and Ken Schrader spins onto pit road. Shephard ends up going to the garage and his day is through.
The green drops with Jeff Gordon still in the lead. By lap 25 it is Gordon, Kurt Busch, Skinner, Newman, and Waltrip completing the top 5. Lap 30 is time for scheduled pit stops and Gordon leads them down pit row. Kasey Kahne has blazing pit stop and leads the pack back out onto the track for lap 31. Kahne keeps the lead though lap 34 when Waltrip takes over. He leads through the next series of pit stops at lap 44. Johnny Sauter takes over the lead by not pitting.
Elliot Sadler heads to the garage on lap 47 after smoke comes from his rearend. Johnny Sauter still leads but not for long as Mike Skinner takes the lead and Kyle Busch moves into second on lap 52. A whole lot of jostling is going on and some thing has to give. Finally it does and a five car crash ensues, collecting Gordon, Leffler, Kahne, Edwards and Kvapil. Edwards and Kahne are out while Gordon, Leffler, and Kvapil limp back into the race.
Sauter has smoke coming out of his vehicle during the caution, and Mike Skinner still leads. Skinner continues to lead going into the final lap when Earnhardt takes over, and Waltrip close behind. Going into turn 4, Waltrip takes the chance and passes Earnhardt on the outside, taking the win by half a car length.
