The day dawned brightly on Daytona Speedway on February 12th for all 41 drivers that would competing in the evening 200 mile race, little did they know that by the end of the night all hell would have broke loose.
They should have known it was going to be a bad night when a crash on lap 24 brought out the red flag on lap 28. Clair Zimmerman got loose on the backstretch, going to the grass, then getting airborne as he went back up the track and taking out a portion of the catch-fence. Racing was stopped for 45 minutes while they made repairs to the fence.
During the yellow flag before the red came out, another incident took place in the pits. Pre-race favorite Blake Feese came into the pits a bit hot and over-shot his pit stall and skidding into the opening on pit road to the garage, hitting several photographers sending most to the infield care center and one to the hospital.

Another accident took place on lap 39 that took another 6 cars out of the race. Then it was announced that due to the delay from the red flag earlier that the race was being shortened to 65 laps because the Bud Shootout was coming up fast. So with every one jostling for position the major accident of the race happened.
15 cars were involved in the accident that happened on the backstretch of lap 63. Todd Kluver was hit from behind causing him to go airborne and upside down on the track where he got hit again, this time by Larry Foyt. That impact caused Kluver's car to be pushed into the infield grass, still at speed, where his car went end-over-end finally landing on its wheels. Amazingly enough, Kluver was released soon after being taken to the infield care center.

However, other drivers weren't so fortunate. While most of the involved drivers followed the pattern of Kluver and were released from the infield care center soon after being brought in, Billy Venturini and Dan Shaver were both admitted to the hospital, where Shaver was eventually released. Venturini however, was diagnosed with a fractured C2 (neck) and torn neck ligaments. He has undergone surgery and the prognosis is good with no paralysis, however he is in a halo for now to keep everything in place.
Losing 15 cars in one accident left only 12 cars in the race from the 41 that started. Of the 12 that were left, Bobby Gerhart ended up with the win driving his own Lucas Oil #5. This is Gerhart's 3rd straight win in the Advance Discount Auto Part's 200 in addition to his 3rd straight pole at Daytona. _________________ A win is a win, and second place is never good enough |
