3-time Daytona 500 winner Dale Jarrett captured his third career pole with a speed of 188.312 mph pushing Jeff Gordon out of the top spot on the way. Gordon has previously qualified best with a speed of 188.155 mph. Jimmie Johnson, who qualified only 4 drivers from the finish of qualifying, pushed his teammate Gordon out of the front row with a run of 188.170 mph.
In the new qualifying procedures for Daytona, while the top 35 in owner points from 2004 automatically qualify for the 500, only the top-2 in qualiying are set. Everyone else is basically running for thier starting position during the twin 150-mile qualifiers.
