Jimmie Johnson carried over the momentum from the '04 season with a win in the 27th running of the Bud Shootout.
While an exhibition race, the Shootout can be a preview of the Daytona 500 winner with 5 winners of the Shootout going on to take the Daytona 500; Dale Jarrett (2000 and 1996), Jeff Gordon (1997), Bill Elliott (1987), and Bobby Allison (1982).
The Shootout is a made for TV race that is run in two segments. The first segment is 20 laps after which a 10 minute intemission is held. During this time teams can do anything to thier cars that would be allowed during a pit stop. The second segment is 50 laps that is required to end in a green-white-checkered finish. The Shootout is open to drivers that have captured a pole in the 2004 season or have won a past edition of the Bud Shootout.
The starting position is determined by a draw from a hat. This year saw Dale Jarrett win the pole position, followed by Greg Biffle to round out the front row.

#9-Kahne lost an engine in practice and will have to fall to the rear of the field before the drop of the green flag.
Dale Jarrett led the first lap, until Greg Biffle came around him to take over first place in a surprisingly fast Ford. Biffle ended up leading through the first 20 laps until the intermission. Several drivers had trouple during the first segment including Dale Earnhart, Jr. who was plagued with electrical problems pushing him to the back of the field. During the intermission they changed everything they could to get back into contention. It apprears that they solved the problem because after the restart Earnhardt moved back towards the front eventually finishing in 7th.
Biffle ended up leading a total of 44 laps, losing the lead after the pit stops on lap 46 where he trailed Ryan Newman and Jimmie Johnson, never to regain the lead. Newman built a considerable lead over the rest of the field due to a 2 tire pit stop versus 4 tires for the rest. Although Newman was able to get out of pit lane first the choise to take 2 tires would be his undoing. Ryan was able to lead until lap 55 when Jimmie Johnson would go past for the lead. With the 4 tires Johnson took, it was just a matter of time before he was able to catch Newman.
Once Jimmie took over the lead the race was his to lose. Unfortunately for the other drivers, Johnson wasn't about to give up the win. The driver many have picked to take the 2005 championship, Jimmie Johnson held on to win the '05 edition of the Bud Shootout folowed by Newman, Jeff Gordon, Stewart, and Biffle to round out the top 5.
