Being the first race of the year, the Daytona 500 employs different qualifying procedures than races further on in the season.
The top-35 in points from the previous year are split up into two groups, even points positions (2,4,6,etc.) will race in one of the two Gatorade Duels, and with the odd points positions (1,3,5,etc.) racing in the other Duel. Actual staring positions are determined by qualifying the previous Sunday.
While the top-35 drivers are guaranteed a place in the 500 where they will start is based on their finish in their Duel race. So in order for a non-top-35 car to make in into the 500 they would have to finish 1st or 2nd in their Duel race.
Even with all the confusion that comes with qualifying for the Daytona 500, two things will stay the same:
- The front row is locked after qualifying.
- The starting positions of the 500 (other than the front row)will be determined by the finishing spots of the qualifying races, regardless of points. _________________ A win is a win, and second place is never good enough |
