NASCAR has announced new qualifying procedures that will affect all three of their national series.
In past seasons, car owners "earned" provisional starting positions based on thier results in each race. These provisional's could then be carried over to another race to gain a starting position in a race they did not qualify for.
For 2005, provisional starting positions will be based on the point standings in thier respective series. For example, in the Nextel Cup, the first 35 positions of the available 43, will be reserved for the top-35 in the points standings with final positions determined through qualifying speeds. Then the next 7 positions will be determined by qualifying speeds, and the final provisional position, or "champions provisional" being reserved for who is a current or past champion of that series. If more then one past champion needs a provisional, then it will be determined by who is the most current champion.
The Busch series will be run the same with the first 30 positions of the 43 available being open to the top-30 in points, then the next 12 available according to qualifying speed. A "champions provisional" will also be available.
And in the Craftsman truck series, the first 30 positions, of the available 36, will be open to the top-30 in points. The next 5 then are open by qualifying speed, and the final position for the "champions provisional".
To start off the season, the top provisionals will be determined by 2004 points through the first five races, then they will be determined by 2005 points for the rest of the season.
This new provisional setup was implimented due to the large amount of dollars spend by many teams throughout the year not wanting to miss a race because of a bad run or because of a limited-schedule racer beating them out of a spot. While the little racer might be getting the short end of the stick here, I think it rewards the larger teams for spending the millions of dollars, year after year.
Only time will tell if it brings the results that the teams are looking for. _________________ A win is a win, and second place is never good enough |
