I wondered if anyone would be kind enough to explain the rules and various other things to do with NASCAR. I know next to nothing about the sport as we dont get any coverage or anything over here in Scotland. It sounds like an interesting sport to follow.

Well what do you want to know SB? NASCAR primarily races on oval tracks from 1/2 mile to 2.5 miles in length. However, they will run at least one road course this year in Watkins Glen, NY.

The winner of the series is determined by points accumulated through out the year. 2004 saw a change in the format where the top-10 drivers with 10 races to go in the season were the only ones that had a chance for the championship. Many diehard fans were appalled at the change but it turned out to be a resounding success making it the most exciting championship in years. Points are given for such things as leading a lap, qualifying position, and finishing position.

There are approximately 40 races in the season with the most important being the first race of the year, the Daytona 500 which this year is on February 20. This race started as a race held on the beach and highway of Daytona, Florida. Now the race is held on a track built by the founder of NASCAR, Bill France, and has become the Mecca of NASCAR fans, with the same mystical feeling comparable to the Brickyard in Indy.

That is a brief overview, let me know if there are specifics you are interested in.

Your reply has pretty much confirmed my thoughts on the sport. I knew it was something like that.

To be honest, if i was telling somebody the rules of NASCAR then i very much doubt i could have put it better than that.

Thank you!
