Tony started racing karts on the Brazillian circuit at the tender age of 12 years old. He had been introduced to racing by his father who had taken him to his first race when he was 8 years old. Tony was a natural, winning 6 championships in his first 4 years. Tony quickly moved up to Brazillian Formula Ford where he placed 6th, and Brazillian Formula Chevrolet where he improved to 5th overall. In 1993 Tony moved to Europe and the Formula Opel Euroseries, where he finished 10th by only running a limited schedule.

The next year Tony scored 5 wins on his way to winning the Italian Formula Alfa-Boxer Championship outright. 1995 saw Tony gain one win and 9 podium finishes on the way to a 5th place in the Italian Formula 3 Championship. In 1996 Tony came to the US to star in the Indy Lights series, finishing with 2 wins and 7 top three finishes to come in 2nd overall. But Tony wasn't done yet. The next season Tony again scored 2 victories and 7 top 3 finishes in Indy Lights, however this time Tony captured the overall title.

Tony moved to big league racing in 1998 by entering the CART series. Winning the Rookie of the Year award with 2 third place finishes, Tony ended up 9th in points for the season. Tony had had limited success in CART when he signed on to the IRL in 2002 by competing his first Indy 500. Although he crashed out of the race, Tony had caught the IRL bug. The next year saw Tony contending for the championship until the last race of the season, where a late crash bumped him down to 4th overall.
