Kurt Busch held off a fast charging field to win the Nextel Cup Championship by a measley 8 points. Going into the final race of the season, the Ford 400 at Miami-Homestead Motor Speedway, Kurt led by Jimmie Johnson by 18 points and Jeff Gordon by 21 points. And what a race it was, especially for eventual Cup champion Busch.
Dodging crashes and debris, Kurt led the first lap thanks to teammate, and eventual race winner, Greg Biffle. Jimmie Johnson was starting at the back of the pack, and Jeff Gordon was somewhere in between. After leading that first lap and staying near the front for most of the race it appeared that Kurt Busch's luck had finally run out. On lap 93, Kurts right front wheel broke off sending the tire with rim cruizing down the race track while Kurt barely missed the barrier at the entrance to pit lane. Although Kurt didn't lose a lap, he was bumped back to 28th on the track and fell to third in the points standings. As if that wasn't enough, he also had to work thorugh a botched pit stop later in the race to fight his way back to 5th by races end, but more importantly back to first in points.
What many considered a questionable to move to a new point system, the Race for the Chase did produce the intended drama at the end of the season.
Can't wait until February for it to start all over again! _________________ A win is a win, and second place is never good enough |
