Tony finished 11th in the 2003 USAC Sprint Car Series but failed to win a feature event for the first time in six years. He did, however, close out the season with a major non-sanctioned Sprint Car win in Arizona and a Midget feature win in New Zealand! His best 2003 USAC Sprint Car finish in 19 starts was a second in the finale at Charlotte, N.C. In eight Weld Racing Silver Crown starts, he posted a seventh at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Tony’s 2002 USAC season resulted in a seventh-place Sprint Car point ranking and 13th in the final Silver Crown Series points. Amazingly his only Sprint Car win, the 25th of his USAC career, came at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio during the “Buckeye Nationals.” He added a second at Haubstadt, Ind. and a pair of thirds. He won the “Sumar Classic” Silver Crown race at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track and was third in the “Hoosier Hundred” Silver crown race at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. In his only 2002 Midget appearance he finished 10th at Joliet, Ill. His spectacular repeat victory in A.J. Foyt’s “Hulman/Hoosier Hundred” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis in 2001 helped Tony finish 11th in the 2001 USAC Silver Crown Series standings. He had four other “top-10” finishes, topped by a fifth in the “4-Crown Nationals” at Rossburg, Ohio. He took third in the USAC Sprint Car Series and fifth in the USAC Dirt-Track Midget Series, winning four Sprint races and two Dirt-Track Midgets. Tony repeated his seventh-place 1999 ranking in the Silver Crown Series in 2000, winning A.J. Foyt's Hulman/Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and adding a fourth and a fifth as well as a pole position for the race at Springfield, IL in August. He also landed his second Sprint Car Championship in 2000 and competed in a handful of Midget events too. He has a total of 39 USAC National victories to his credit. In 1999 he won the “DuQuoin Century” at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in Illinois and finished second to Jimmy Sills at Sacramento, Calif. after winning the pole. He was also third in the “Tony Bettenhausen 100” at Springfield, Ill. In 1999 he also finished third in the Sprint Car series and won the Indiana Sprint Week championship. Tony’s 1998 racing season included a victory in the 200th event in USAC Silver Crown history - the “Sumar Classic 100” at Terre Haute, Ind. He won races in four different USAC series in 1998, the only driver to do so, and emerged with his first USAC National championship - in the Sprint cars. He won five Sprint features and was named Hoosier Auto Racing Fans “Driver of the Year.” He also claimed an $11,000 victory in a USAC Western Sprint race at Las Vegas, Nev., winning on the last lap! One of USAC's most accomplished drivers and a Silver Crown regular since the mid-1980s, he had a pair of runner-up finishes in 1992 when he took sixth in the final standings. That same season he was the runner-up to Stevie Reeves in the USAC National Midget Car points and was named the "Most Improved Driver" in the Silver Crown series.
