Cory was USAC’s sixth-ranking National Sprint Car driver in 2003 and despite failing to score a feature win he posted 14 “top-10” finishes, including seconds in the “Tony Hulman Classic” at Terre Haute, Ind. and at Kokomo, Ind. during Valvoline “Indiana Sprint Week.” Fourths at Joliet, IL and Fremont, OH were his best in eight National Midget starts and his only Weld Racing Silver Crown appearance at the Indiana State Fairgrounds was aborted before the main event. Then, in early-2004, he became a two-time winner of the non-USAC-sanctioned Chili Bowl Midget race at Tulsa, OK, besting a field of 219 entrants! One of America’s most accomplished open-wheel veterans, Cory enjoyed his best USAC season in 2002, taking ninth in the final Sprint Car Series points. The 2001 Champion of the SCRA Sprint Car Series in California, Cory had competed under the USAC banner for more than a dozen years and in USAC Sprint Cars since 1995. He swept to victory in the first three races of “Indiana Sprint Week” and added a fourth win at Terre Haute, Ind. to put a lid on the “Indiana Sprint Week” title. That left him with seven career USAC Sprint Car wins to his credit. In 1999 he won “Indiana Sprint Week” races at Bloomington and Kokomo, Ind. and in 2000 he won an “Indiana Sprint Week” feature at Haubstadt, Ind. A graduate of the tough USAC TQ Midget Car Series, Cory scored 11 feature wins between 1990 and 1993 at Ventura, Bakersfield, San Bernardino and Hanford, Calif. and in 1990 he was second to Jay Drake in the final TQ standings. He followed with “top-10” point rankings the next three years, then survived a spectacular Midget-Car crash on the California State Fairgrounds mile in 1995. Cory has also made sporadic Silver Crown appearances and in nine total starts since 1995 his best finishes have been a fifth at Terre Haute, Ind. and a fourth at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
