Ron Hornaday Jr. raced karts and motorcycles before beginning his stock car career driving Modifieds at Saugus (Calif.) Speedway.
He won Featherlite Southwest Series titles in 1992 and 1993 and was second in the Winston West Series standings and was voted most popular driver in that series in 1994. The son of former Winston West champion Ron Hornaday, he has 17 career Winston West victories.
In 1995, Hornaday became the first driver hired at Dale Earnhardt Inc. after Earnhardt watched him dominate the NASCAR Winter Heat television series on ESPN. He quickly made an impression, finishing fifth in the series standings.
In 1996, Hornaday won the Craftsman Truck Series title in dominating fashion, with four wins and 24 top-10 finishes in 25 events.
In 1998, he repeated the feat, this time with six wins and 16 top-five finishes in 27 starts.
After a seventh-place finish in 1999 NCTS standings, Hornaday moved up to the Busch Series and finished fifth in the series points with two wins.
In 2001, Hornaday moved to NASCAR's elite series for A.J. Foyt Racing and struggled, with just one top-10 finish in 32 starts.
The divorce between Hornaday and Foyt was far from amicable.
"I understand he's bitter because we missed some shows. Heck, I'm used to winning and not making races is something I don't like doing either," Hornaday said.
"Maybe (Foyt) doesn't understand how competitive I am. You don't want to bad-mouth anybody, but I think A.J. needs to know what is really going on at that shop."
After taking several temporary jobs in 2002, Hornaday was hired by Richard Childress in 2003 to drive the No. 2 Chevrolet in the Busch Series. He finished third in the series standings with a win and 16 top-10 finishes.
"We were really consistent... , better in points, had no major problems and that's what you have to do," he said.
