Bill Elliott began racing at in NASCAR at the young age of 20 years old. Bill’s father had brought Bill and his brothers to the track to keep them out of trouble and to keep an eye on them, eventually leading to Bill wanting to race. After 6 years of the Elliott family struggling to keep Bill in a limited Cup schedule, help came in the form of Michigan businessman Harry Melling. Bill was finally able to run the full schedule and won his first race in November of 1983 at Riverside International.

Bill’s breakout year was 1985 when he earned 11 poles and 11 wins. Three of those wins included the Daytona 500, Winston 500, and Southern 500, completing the first “Winston Million”, and earning the nickname “Million Dollar Bill.”

In 1988, after winning 6 races, 6 poles, and with 11 top-5 and 22 top-10 finishes, Bill won the NASCAR Championship. After leaving Malling in 1992 to drive for Junior Johnson, Bill narrowly missed a second championship, losing to Alan Kulwicki by just 10 points.

Perhaps Bill's most noteworthy accomplishment is his dominance of the Most Popular Driver award. He has taken the honor a record 16 times, including 10 consecutive awards from 1991-2000.

Bill is currently running a limited schedule in the Evernham #91 in preparation for retirement. He has passed his seat in the Dodge Dealers/UAW #9, in addition to invaluable knowledge, onto rising star Kasey Kahne who has just clinched the 2004 Rookie of the Year Award.
