Darrell Waltrip started his journey towards championship stock car driver when he was 12 years old and strapped into his first go-kart. Four short years later, Darrell entered his first stock car race on the dirt near his home town of Owensboro, KY. Darrell soon left the dirt however to the asphalt where he soon found his place using the skills he learned in kart racing. By the late 1960s Darrell had become a regular fixture at the fairgrounds track in Nashville, Tenn.
After developing into one of the nations top short-track drivers, Darrell made his first Cup Series start in 1972 at the Talladega Superspeedway. Running a limited schedule over the next few years, Darrell finally obtained a full time ride in 1975.
Darrell is a five time winner of the Coca-Cola 600, and captured a win in the Daytona 500 in 1989. In his 28 year Cup career, Darrell has made 809 starts, earning 59 poles, and 84 victories putting him 4th and 3rd overall respectively. In addition, Darrell hold the modern-era record of 8 wins from the pole established in 1981.
Since his retirement in 2000, Darrell has become a color commentator for TV, and a team owner in the Craftsman Truck Series.
