Buddy Baker was known for the record-setting speed he regularly attained in his 34-year Cup Series career. The son of the legendary Buck Baker, 6 foot 6 inch Buddy earned the name of “Leadfoot” around the track. In 1970, Buddy revved his car to over 200 mph, the first to do so on a closed course. Then in 1980, Buddy took the checkered flag at the Daytona posting a record speed of 177.6 mph, a record that still stands today.
While he could post a fast speed around the track Buddy was also one of the best at driving. Through out his career, he won 4 times at Charlotte, 4 at Talladega, and twice at each Daytona and Darlington. Overall, Buddy posted a total 19 career wins, with 17 of those on superspeedways. Along with those wins comes 40 poles, 202 top-5’s, and 311 top-10’s in 688 starts.
Since his retirement, Buddy has been inducted into the Charlotte Motor Speedway Court of Legends and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
